2010 Summer Camp Information
Printable version
Summer camp is considered a best part of a Scout’s year. Scouts who attend summer camp early (and often) advance faster and tend to stick with Scouting in the long run. At Camp Bell, you will create your own menus and cook your own meals, have a chance to throw tomahawks, shoot rifles, and crawl through a fantastic mudhole in Challenge Valley. With no adults telling you not to get dirty!!
At Hidden Valley, you’ll be able to work on your Tenderfoot and Second Class advancement as well as sneak in a merit badge or two. You will likely, sink your Troop mates in Assault Boats, do more rifle shooting, and identify mystery objects at mealtime!
Troop 119 will be going to Summer Camp for two weeks in August. Both camps have been chosen because of the range of activities available, the quality of the camp staff, and the fun that our Troop has at each camp. Both camps are located on Griswold Scout Reservation in Gilmanton Iron Works, New Hampshire. Most of our Scouts go to at least one week of Summer Camp; over half go to both weeks.
Camp Bell: August 8-14
Camp Bell offers a unique camping experience to Boy Scout Troops that are ready for the fun of classic Scouting. The activities at Camp Bell are all patrol-based. Each patrol of 4-8 boys decides on a schedule of activities for the week. Each day the patrol cooks breakfast for itself, then does the day’s activity, cooks dinner together and then has a choice of evening activities with the Troop.
Hidden Valley Boy Scout Camp: August 15-21
Hidden Valley offers a traditional Scout camping atmosphere with merit badge opportunities, First Year Camper Program, Troop activities, camp wide competitions, dining hall and much more. Hidden Valley is the place Scouts think of when they think summer camp! Scouts chose merit badge or skills classes for the morning and participate in Troop activities in the afternoon.

2010 Merit Badges at Hidden Valley
Now it's time to choose your Merit Badges at Hidden Valley. You will be selecting Merit Badges/Activities for the morning hours 9am-noon. Most Merit Badge classes last for one hour. There are some that take two hours. So you will be designating 2-3 choices.
First Year Scouts are recommended to sign up for the First Year Program. In addition, Troop 119 has a policy that all Scouts must earn the Swimming Merit Badge. Unless First Year Scouts have already earned this badge, they will be signed up for Swimming.
Be aware that your Merit Badge preference are sent for registration as priorities. The registration program at HV may change the order of your Merit Badges. We will try to keep you in sessions with other 119 Scouts, so you will have a buddy during the morning. If you want to work with a particular Scout, please let me know and we will try to make that happen.
Please print out the 2010 Merit Badge sheet and circle the sessions you would prefer. You can hand it in to me at a Troop Meeting. I'll be trying to talk to all of you during the meetings to make sure that we have the advancement information we need to register you.

How much money should I bring?
$10 to $30 per week for the Trading Post, depending on handicraft activities.
How do we get there?
See the Directions to Summer Camp webpage. The directions are the same to both camps. To get to Camp Bell, you will continue along the dirt road from the Hidden Valley parking lot. It should take 2 hours to get there from Lexington.
When should we arrive at camp?
Plan to arrive at 1 p.m. on Sunday for either week. the entire Troop must wait until all members have arrived before we can check in together, so please, do not be late.
What should I have ready when I arrive?
You should wear your Class A uniform and carry a daypack. Your pack must remain with you and should contain your Troop 119 t-shirt, swimsuit, towel, water bottle and any medications. All other luggage will be checked in and brought to the campsite. All luggage items should be clearly marked with your name and “Troop 119” for easy identification.
What else should I bring?
The webpage titled What to Bring to Summer Camp has a list of personal gear to bring to camp. Use the checklist to be sure you have everything you’ll need. Be sure to mark all your gear with your name and “Troop 119” or “T119.”
How should I hang my mosquito netting over my bed?
You should only use kite string to hold netting over your sleeping bag. Other alternatives are not permitted (i.e. duct tape can damage the tents).

The troop photo is taken on BOTH Sundays, during the check-in process. There is an additional charge for camp photos.
How do I do my laundry at camp?
There are no machines for washing and drying your clothes at camp. You are welcome to wash and dry your stuff “the old fashioned way” in the campsite. Ask one of the adult leaders to help if a sleeping bag needs washing.
When can my family come for a visit?
Guests and family members are encouraged to visit boys staying for two weeks on the Saturday between weeks. All scouts must leave camp by 9:30 a.m. and return to camp at 4:30 p.m. Because this is the only time when leaders will have a break, if you cannot pick up your son for the day, please make arrangements for another family to entertain your son and let the Scoutmaster know. Always be sure to check out with a Troop 119 adult leader before leaving camp, so we know where our scouts are at all times. If your son will be picked up by someone other than a parent, the Scoutmaster must receive, in advance, a written note.
Can I call home?
Scouts are only to permitted to use a camp phone in case of an emergency and must have a Troop 119 adult leader present. Please do not encourage your Scout to call home.
